Tempe is defined by its youthful vitality, ever present at Arizona State University (ASU) and downtown Tempe's Mill Avenue. On any given day, visitors can find a live music, theater, comedy, or dance performance including funky local bands, award-winning local theater, blockbuster Broadway productions, and contemporary dance companies in Tempe. Arizona State University's (ASU) main campus occupies 700 acres in the heart of Tempe and enrolls a total of 52,000 students.

Tempe residents and local professionals spent six months on the Underage Drinking and Drug Use Community Planning Committee studying data, resources, national trends and studies, as well as current policies in Tempe. The goal of the committee was to create a strategic plan which would guide the underage drinking and drug use prevention activities in Tempe for the next three to five years.
